California Nursery Garden Club honors long-time volunteer

Judy Silbermann has volunteered at the park for over two decades

The California Nursery Garden Club recently honored long-time volunteer Judy Silbermann for her commitment and dedication to the display gardens at the California Nursery Historical Park. The Park, located in Niles, houses five gardens, including the Shade Garden, which was designed and developed by Ms. Silbermann over her more than two decades of service. Approximately thirty-five guests celebrated at the Vallejo Adobe, including members of the Garden Club, Ms. Silbermann’s family, members of the Friends of Heirloom Flowers who garden at Shinn Park, city employees, and community members. Refreshments were generously donated by Laurel Beebe, owner and operator of Oh, Cake Catering.

The Adobe was decorated with flower arrangements and displays created by gardeners from both California Nursery Garden Club and Friends of Heirloom Flowers. Parked outside the Adobe was the 1934 Ford Phaeton owned and provided by Gary Mills, advertising The California Nursery Company, on whose property the Adobe now sits. Linens and glassware were provided by Wendy Winsted.

Speakers included Peggy Cassity, local historian Janet Barton, Wilma Spillers, Joanne Dean, and Brenda Nixon, members of California Nursery Garden Club, and Denise LePielbet from Friends of Heirloom Flowers. In addition, Irene Jordahl and Rico Lardizabal presented a certificate and gift from the city of Fremont. Ms. Silbermann was also awarded a pair of gold gloves and a golden Hori Hori gardening knife from the garden club. Ms. Silbermann’s contribution to the beautification and sustainability of the garden deserves the thanks of her community.
