On September 21, thousands of volunteers across the state will take part in California Coastal Cleanup Day.
Now in its 40th year, California Coastal Cleanup Day has grown to become the country’s largest annual volunteer event, where participants remove hundreds of thousands of pounds of trash from the state’s beaches, lakes and waterways.
Organized and run by the California Coastal Commission, the event not only reduces litter dramatically, but also provides important data that can be used to affect public policy. As an example, plastic bags were the 5th most common item of trash collected in 1998. This caused the state to ban plastic bags in 2016, and the following year plastic bags disappeared from the top 10 most common items collected.
The movement has spread across the globe. An International Coastal Cleanup managed by the Ocean Conservancy now takes place in almost every state and in over 100 countries, and has become the world’s largest volunteer event related to the marine environment.
Join the effort to protect wildlife and preserve our natural spaces by taking trash out of the environment. Volunteer with your family, friends, coworkers, school groups and service clubs.
