Waking up with a dreadful feeling of uncertainty has become routine these days. The sentiment is encapsulated in the 1966 song “Monday, Monday” written by John Phillips, sung by the Mamas & the Papas. Although focused on a personal relationship facet of life, the lyrics can easily be adapted to current angst over world affairs, economics and politics. Hopeful thoughts – “It was all I hoped it would be” – are juxtaposed with reality – “you can find me cryin’ all of the time,” resulting in the conclusion that you “can’t trust that day.”
In the midst of an atmosphere of despair, anger and distrust there are glimmers of hope. An honest appraisal of the trials and tribulations that confront our society can give a measure of relief; a sense of movement and purpose toward a more optimistic and brighter future. Participation in the recent mid-term primary election offers a bit of clarity and points to the importance and necessity of continued vigilance of our democratic system. It can also serve as a reminder that government is much more than elected officials and political party shenanigans.
Through a haze of candidate claims, counterclaims and political posturing, the myriad mundane functions of government such as maintaining roads, transportation, parks and recreation, social programs, defense and security, to name a few, continue unabated. To equate hyper-partisanship with the role of others employed in government positions is a mistake. Using the term “government” as a substitute for a political party or program is a vast oversimplification. While much of the media is consumed with sensational headlines, it is important to understand, and separate from routine matters, their importance and critical role to curb the corrosive influence of money, power and prestige that accompanies elected office. However, it is also crucial to appreciate the functions of self-rule government as well. These do not generate headlines but without them, our daily lives would be severely and negatively impacted.
We are in the midst of what seems to be an interminable Monday that is unpredictable. In many ways this is an overwhelming moment that can easily baffle even the most composed individuals. Faith in our system of government and its representatives has been shaken to its core, but Mondays eventually give way to Tuesday and beyond. Belief in reasonable solutions and perseverance that has seen previous generations through difficult times will prevail this time too.
The ballad also holds hope, noting… “Every other day of the week is fine”
