Someone’s been eating my porridge!
In 1837, there were three bears, but no small child with golden hair. Instead, the tale, published by English poet Robert Southey, featured an old and disagreeable woman who enters the home of three amicable, hospitable bachelor bears out for a walk while waiting for their porridge to cool. The old woman breaks Wee Bear’s chair, eats his porridge and falls asleep in his bed. Upon discovery by the returning bears, the old woman runs away. Prior to Southey’s version, the story circulated with some variations as a cautionary admonition for children who lack self-control.
Over time, the characters changed to become a bear family – papa, mama and baby – and a small, more innocuous, fair-haired child. Joseph Cundall’s re-creation, eventually named Goldilocks by Flora Annie Steel, no longer a disruptive, disreputable hag, teaches a lesson about respecting the possessions of others and finding a solution that is “just right.”
In elemental fashion, Goldilocks and the Three Bears is a study of extremism and the search for what is just the right balance between them. The disruptive, destructive and juvenile behavior of Goldilocks is juxtaposed with a calm and orderly bear habitat. It’s a tale of an uninvited guest, softened by use of a small child as the intruder, in an interesting study of a complex problem. Goldilocks found satisfaction by sampling possessions of others, but did so under negative circumstances she created.
Although a fairy tale usually reserved for young children, applying the Goldilocks experience to current events does have relevance. Watching and listening to the hearings of the January 6, 2021 US Capitol invasion, some comparisons are unavoidable. The mob involved might claim they were invited to enter the Capitol, but legitimacy is questionable; methods and tactics totally unacceptable.
As more information has become available, it is evident that the experiment with extremism has not, so far, resulted in finding a just right solution to societal angst. So far, in this contemporary story, the chair has been broken, porridge sampled and bed prepared. The bears have returned to find their orderly house in disarray and spread the alarm.
A message and parallels are clear. Can we find the right balance between extremes? Can our house be put back in order? Are we represented by the young girl with golden hair that will return to her family having learned a lesson of moderation and self-control? Or, are we the hag who runs off into the woods having learned nothing?
