The League of Women Voters is a non-partisan organization that engages in activities to enlighten and educate citizens about their role in the electoral process and the governmental life of the community.
In this era, it is especially important that high school students, who will soon have the right to vote, understand the role that they will play in the community as they enter adulthood, and that they appreciate the powerful civic tool, the Constitution, that was entrusted to them by the founding fathers.
Sept. 17 is National Constitution Day, the day designated by Congress to remember our founding 250 years ago and to teach about democracy. It recalls the 1787 vote of the Constitutional Convention to adopt the Articles of Confederation. On Sept. 17, at 5pm a panel of experts will hold a Q&A session in the Round Room auditorium at John F. Kennedy High School.
The event will also kick off a student challenge to produce an essay on the topic of “We the Future—What the Constitution Means to you.”
All Fremont students entering grades nine through 12 are invited to enter. The top three winning essays will be awarded cash prizes between $500 and $2,000.
