New permanent art pieces are coming to Fremont. The city council approved an art sculpture and mosaic art that would be installed at the Centerville Community Park. The project is part of the city’s park expansion plan. The expansion is expected to be completed by September 2027.
The city council approved a first, second and third choice art piece. Each choice included an art sculpture and mosaic tile selection. Second and third choices are provided in case an artist decides not to sign a contract agreement with the city.
The first choice includes Colin Selig’s “Arachnicat.” “It has an insect’s body, feline ears, a scorpion’s tail and five anthropomorphically muscular legs,” Selig said in his art proposal to the city. The orange-red sculpture is both the first and second choice art selections for the park.
It’s made out of steel from propane tanks that are repurposed and reassembled. There’s already a version of the same sculpture in Dublin. Selig said his artwork is meant for public interaction like sitting, touching and sometimes climbing.
The first choice also includes mosaic artwork by Rita Soyfertis called “Draping Botanic.”
The second mosaic tile choice is Kala Stein for “Fieldwork: Native Wildflowers of Fremont.” Her mosaic art would show flowers that grow in Fremont, like the California poppy, California Goldfields, the Coastal Larkspur and Baby Blue Eyes.
The sculpture art is planned for a spot somewhere in the park or next to the bocce ball courts. The mosaic art would be placed on the bocce ball court walls.
