The Fremont Recreation Commission approved a city council recommendation to name a trail after someone who dedicated nearly 30 years of his life in public service. The commission voted unanimously on Aug. 5 to name the trail that borders a grassy area near the upcoming community center and the Fremont Main Library the Gus Morrison Trail.
The community center was formerly dubbed Central Park Community Center. However, name changes will be up for a vote at a future meeting.
Gus Morrison served as Fremont mayor for 15 years. He was an environmental advocate who fought against more development on the Fremont hills and worked with others to expand the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife refuge. Morrison died in December 2023.
Morrison’s daughter Gloria Ritchie spoke during the meeting to honor him. She talked about her father’s role as councilmember and mayor during a time of change, which included a growing population and expanded neighborhoods.
“My father didn’t just witness that transformation,” she said. “He helped to guide it. He believed Fremont could grow while still protecting what made it special. And he worked every day to make that vision real. He listened to people. He showed up, he rolled up his sleeves and went to work.”
Fremont management analyst Anisha Mistry led the presentation of the naming of the community center. “The proposed name clearly identifies both the facility and its location within Central Park, making it easy for the community to recognize,” she said. “It also reflects the building’s role as a community gathering place that will serve the Fremont community of all ages, through recreation, learning and community programs.”
