Four of Newark’s city parks will begin to have public Wi-Fi access in accordance with the city’s Broadband Master Plan goals by the end of summer 2026.
Assembly Member Alex Lee (24th District) secured $1.8 million in state funding for the Broadband Master Plan to bring public Wi-Fi to city parks.
This project is also funded by $1 million from the American Rescue Plan Act and other city funding sources. The City of Newark requested state funding to develop its Broadband Master Plan, and Newark is continuing to evaluate and find additional funding for their long-term broadband goals, according to Lee’s office.
Broadband projects are among the most important technology investments worldwide, according to the plan’s executive summary, essential for economic development and job creation.
Applying a broadband plan to Newark will help the city achieve improved reliability and speeds in the community, such as including wireless and 5G technology.
According to Lee’s office, based on Newark’s community outreach, the public requested improving broadband access and stronger connectivity in public spaces.
“As Newark seeks to ensure efficient broadband access for all residents and businesses, I am committed to supporting the city’s efforts [to expand] reliable, high-speed internet,” said Lee. “Broadband connectivity is essential in the 21st century, and investing in the city’s broadband infrastructure will ensure residents’ ability to participate fully in modern life.”
The parks receiving Wi-Fi are Newark Community Center Park, Birch Grove Park, Jerry Raber Ash Street Park and Mel Nines Sportsfield Park.
