This summer, Newark Memorial High School (NMHS) is introducing its first-ever all-comers meet on Saturday, June 27. Funds raised from meet registration will go towards the high school’s track and field program.
The meet welcomes athletes of all ages and skill levels, from casual runners to competitive collegiate athletes. Every individual track and field event will be open for registration until Friday, June 26. Relays are excluded from the track event list.
NMHS’s head track and field coach Tyler Jorgens explains how the idea of hosting a meet has been on the minds of many who are involved with the program.
“Todd Tokubo, who has had his kids run at Newark [Memorial] and does photography for a lot of the sports, has brought up the idea over the years,” said Jorgens.
Said Tokubo, “In the summers there’s a bit of a gap for our local area. There are all-comers farther out in the East Bay, but not much in our area. We felt there’s an opportunity for the athletes in nearby areas.”
WestCoastXC, an online media company, will be donating prizes for the event.
The meet will take place on the high school’s new track. In August 2025, an official ribbon cutting was held to introduce the facility’s renovations to the NMHS community. Renovations included a turf field, a new track with freshly painted lanes and jumping pits which included an updated concrete area.
The school’s updated facility was another indicator that this was the year for the Cougars to host an all-comers meet.
“It was hard to host anything,” said Jorgens about the facility before the updates. “The long and triple jump pits were in bad shape, the track was also in bad condition. Now, it’s a place where people want to compete.”
