Serra Center marks 50th anniversary

Center supports East Bay residents with developmental disabilities

Serra Center celebrated a major milestone in 2025—its 50th anniversary of providing compassionate, community-based care for people living with developmental disabilities across the East Bay.

Founded in 1975 as an arm of the National Benevolent Association, Serra Center is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation that serves more than 80 individuals, from young adults to seniors. Its programs include residential care homes, independent and supported living services and counseling, reaching people in eight cities, including Newark, Hayward and San Leandro.

“Nearly half of those we help have been with us for more than 30 years,” said Lisa Senadenos, CEO, Serra Center. “Our commitment to some of our community’s most vulnerable residents has remained steadfast for five decades. Each day, we’re honored to witness the progress these individuals make through the consistent support Serra Center provides.”

Community partnership continues to play a vital role. Fremont Bank Foundation recently donated $50,000 to renovate bathrooms at Serra Center’s Valpey Park and Ellen Homes in Fremont. Staff provide 24/7 care in these older dwellings, helping residents remain safe and secure.

Today, 98% of the people Serra Center serves successfully integrate into their communities through employment, volunteering and other meaningful activities.
