Logan High School student crowned California Silver Glove State Champion

A round of applause is in order for Jorge Sanchez, a rising star in the boxing world, who has earned the prestigious title of California Silver Glove State Champion. A dedicated student at Logan High School, Jorge’s exceptional achievement is a testament to his grit, discipline and the support he receives from his training home, Brick House Boxing Gym in Union City.

The Silver Glove Tournament is no ordinary competition. Spanning four grueling months, it pits champions against one another in a test of skill, endurance and determination. Jorge’s journey began by clinching the Northern California Championship, outclassing a competitive field of nine top-tier boxers to secure his spot at the state level.

At the California State Championship, Jorge represented Northern California in a bracket featuring champions from Central, Southern and Border California. Over two hard-fought bouts, he emerged victorious, claiming the coveted title of California State Champion. Next month, his next challenge lies at the Regional Silver Glove Championship, where he will represent California against champions from six neighboring states. Success at regionals would pave the way for him to participate in the National Silver Glove Tournament in Missouri this February.

Coach Johnny Gusman, a proud mentor at Brick House Boxing Gym, also celebrated the efforts of another standout athlete, Michael Bazan. Michael showcased exceptional talent at the State Championship, winning his first bout to advance to the finals. Though he fell short in a razor-close decision, his performance exemplified the skill and perseverance Brick House Boxing athletes are known for.

“I am incredibly proud of Jorge and Michael. Their hard work, dedication and passion for learning the craft of boxing are inspiring. These young athletes represent the best of our gym and our community,” shared Gusman.

Brick House Boxing Gym is seeking partners willing to help fund travel expenses, equipment and resources to continue supporting promising athletes like Jorge and Michael. These contributions are crucial to sustaining the gym’s mission of nurturing young talent and keeping their championship dreams alive.

Union City can take pride in Jorge Sanchez’s success as he prepares to represent California on the regional stage. With unwavering community support, the road ahead looks bright for these young athletes and their journey toward boxing greatness.
