The holiday in Mexico, “Día de Los Muertos” (Day of the Dead) is a celebrated tradition in Latin America, particularly in Mexico. This joyful occasion allows people to remember and honor their deceased loved ones through food, drinks, festivities and activities that those who have passed enjoyed in life. It is a beautiful expression of remembrance and tribute.
The 10th anniversary celebration of Día de Los Muertos took place on Saturday, October 26, 2024, attracting nearly 2,500 attendees. To accommodate this large crowd, a portion of Thornton Avenue was closed. Magnolia Plaza was authentically transformed, featuring sounds and costumes that reflected the rich Latin culture of the community. The event showcased Hispanic culture at its finest, with beautifully crafted Día de Los Muertos altars displayed around Thornton Avenue, allowing families to create memories while honoring their loved ones. The entire area became a vibrant cultural experience. The celebration included performances by Mariachi Los Halcones, local ballet folkloric dance groups, and Arena Caliente, a popular Mexican band, which delighted attendees.
Newark Community Promotores lent their invaluable support in managing the Mexican Lotería, a game beloved by children, as well as coordinating all the children’s craft and art activities, such as the sugar skull decorations, a traditional craft for Dia de Los Muertos. The Public Works Department, Parks & Maintenance staff assisted with event logistics, and the Police Department ensured safety throughout the celebration. City Council Member Sucy Collazo has earned special thanks for organizing this wonderful cultural event.
Families thoroughly enjoyed the entertainment, vibrant and colorful altars and unique local craft vendors at the celebration. The entire community embraced the spirit of Día de Los Muertos and looks forward to continuing this cherished event in the City of Newark for years to come.
