Diwali Festival of Lights

Local groups recreate India celebration this week

Diwali—the Festival of Lights—is one of the most pious and joyous festivals celebrated across India. Festival of Globe (FOG), in association with Federation of Indo-Americans (FIA) of Northern California and Fremont Hindu Temple, will recreate the same traditional fervor in the Bay Area with a festival to take place Oct. 26.

While there are many back stories to why Diwali is celebrated, victory of good over evil is the underlying theme. Diwali is traditionally celebrated on the new moon in October and is a five-day long festival, with the main event marked with lighting up homes and streets, preparing delicious sweets and praying to the goddess of wealth, Lakshmi. After the prayers, people visit their friends and families and wish each other health and wealth. One special feature of Diwali celebrations is fireworks held in every neighborhood to spread joy. Diwali also marks the traditional new year for Indian businesses.

Key features of the event this year are: cultural programs and kids contests; Sari fashion show; jewelry, clothes and food booths, kids talent show and more. Visit Sulekha.com/FOG, Eventmozo.com or FOGSV.org for more details.
