The Office of Alameda County District 2 Supervisor Elisa Márquez in partnership with Cal State East Bay, will host the biennial “Science in the Park” free event celebrating Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM) on Saturday, October 5, 2024, at Cal State East Bay in Hayward.
This year’s theme, “A Greener Future” will showcase STEAM careers and their impact across public and private sectors as well as engaging interactive activities and learning experiences for all ages.
“I’m incredibly excited to carry forward the Science in the Park initiative to celebrate and support our local educators and students,” said Supervisor Márquez. “My team and numerous invaluable partners across the region have designed an event that both engages and inspires the next generation of sustainability leaders. We look forward to welcoming everyone to CSU East Bay for a day filled with discovery and free family fun!”
Since its founding in 2011 by the late District 2 Supervisor Richard Valle, Science in the Park has fostered broad community engagement with STEAM subjects while also raising awareness and financial support for Hayward, New Haven, Newark, and Fremont Unified School Districts through their individual foundations. The free event features local organizations, government agencies, and innovators for a day of family-friendly, hands-on activities. Among this year’s exhibitors will be the NASA Ames Research Center and Space Cookies, a high school robotics team founded in 2006 as a partnership between NASA and Girl Scouts to inspire and prepare the next generation of technology leaders.
CSUEB President Cathy Sandeen recently shared her thoughts about hosting Science in the Park. “We’re really proud to be a partner of this wonderful community event. Science in the Park brings thousands of families to Cal State East Bay. For many kids, it’s the first time they’ve set foot on a college campus. We welcome the opportunity to open their eyes to the possibility of earning a degree—especially in fast-growing science and technology fields.”
Science in the Park 2024 will feature interactive booths, live demonstrations, and opportunities for attendees to come face-to-face with experts across STEAM fields. Participants will have the chance to explore new technologies, witness scientific phenomena up close, and immerse themselves in creative art projects. “It’s one of the great science festivals in the Bay Area,” according to Jim Callahan of ClimateChangeEducation.org.
