Look out for September events

Fun to join around our area!

There are events coming up later in September that we’re excited about. Here are a few, and how to join them.

Tickets for Ardenwood’s Haunted Train are on sale now at. This nighttime ride through sets and dressed up characters is only spooky, not scary. Last year, they sold out within a few days. Get yours at www.eventbrite.com/e/haunted-train-2024-tickets-1006224914807.

Dads are stepping up—literally. Hayward’s “Million Fathers March”—taking place on Friday, September 20—encourages dads, uncles, grandpas and other guardians to accompany their kids to school. Learn more about Hayward Unified School District’s resources for fathers at www.husd.us/fathers.

September 20 is also the Harvest Moon—and Milpitas’ Lantern Festival at the Civic Center Plaza starting at 6pm. Purchase your own lantern-making kit and celebrate Vietnamese culture with performances from Viet Youth Group, Viet Steps and Vietcoustic. Not to mention purchasing some snacks from Saigon Street Food Truck. www.milpitas.gov

Donate to the Ohlone Humane Society—by making some chalk art! Purchase a goodie bag filled with chalk and choose a sidewalk square at Niles Town Plaza to decorate. The event runs 10am – 3pm on September 21. Pet and family-friendly event! ohlonehumanesociety.org

Also on September 21, Niles will hold their Oktoberfest slightly early. One $45 ticket buys a beer glass, beer ticket, sausage and pretzel. Children under 12 and under are free. Join at Veterans Memorial Hall on 2nd Street. www.niles.org/annual-events/oktoberfest

There’s still time to submit your writing to the Flash Fiction Contest! The deadline is by the end of the day on Monday, September 23, and on that Saturday you can read all the submissions posted on the columns at Half-Price Books—and vote for your favorites. Entries must be 300 words or fewer, and this fall’s theme is Frogs. Whether you’re kissing them, dissecting them or plagued by them, there’s much to write about. Send entries to [email protected].
