A jaunty jingle that describes happiness as “something different for different people” is easily applied to the concept of government. Although the word has a specific meaning of controlling or regulating a group of people, large or small, its application is varied.
Governments can take a variety of forms – rule by one (autocracy), by a selected few (oligarchy) or by all (democracy). Often what emerges is a modified version of these basic types. Distribution of power and economic largess depends on the structure and adherence to it.
When things run smoothly without significant interference in daily life, the governed generally rely on a belief that benign intentions prevail. However, in times of stress, the siren call of nihilism lures many, under the guise of patriotism and self-preservation to destroy without regard to a replacement. The result is the chaos of anarchy.
Due to a wide variety of ideologies and applications, it becomes confusing when government is referred to in praise or diatribe. Often viewed as a separate and distinct sector of life and economy, perception can remove its functions from daily life and personal relevance. This is misleading.
n our system of government, a democratic republic of states represented by elected representatives, it is difficult to relate to actions and shenanigans in Washington. D.C. until confronted by a cataclysmic situation. However, this is only a part of our government.
Services and conveniences we take for granted are often the result of government ventures that can only be achieved through a concentration of money and direction. For instance, road construction and maintenance, food safety, aviation control, parks, senior services, protective services and much more are the result of citizen participation through taxes and city/county/state/federal government efforts.
In order to achieve these goals, a vast array of skilled labor is required. This is also government. So while it is an easy target as the focus of ire, it may also be beneficial to clarify who and what part of government we are talking about. Are there fundamental structural flaws that require repair of our type of government? Or, is criticism focused on who and how it functions?
