In 1929, a novel by William Faulkner titled The Sound And The Fury, explored the dysfunctional, decayed structure and fiscal ruin of a previously aristocratic family in early 1900s Mississippi. Using several different narratives, he reveals the dissolution and ultimate failure of internal strength or support. In some ways, the decline and decay of Faulkner’s Compson family elicits striking parallels to today’s national political climate.
A shadow of rude and unacceptable behavior is sweeping across the country and has reached our borders. Inception of the internet, allowing relatively anonymous posts of comments and statements that have been previously shunned are now commonplace.
City council meetings have begun to restrict or ban zoom comments – Fremont is the latest – due to the invasion of hate speech. Civil discourse has become an increasingly rare commodity, exemplified by threats and statements by a presidential contender and supporters both within the government and in the private sector. What has happened to debating issues without threats of violence?
Our country was founded on the principle of checks and balances, allowing citizens to voice their opinions without fear of retribution. These rights are protected by elected representatives, an executive officer and court system to settle legal disputes. At the core of this constitutional republic is the right to a private ballot and trust that our vote will count.
We need to feel secure in the knowledge that our fellow citizens, no matter what political persuasion, do not see us as enemies, rather others of good faith with a different viewpoint. Authoritarian rule through fascist rhetoric cannot be tolerated or allowed to poison our system.
Faulkner seems prophetic in his dissection of the Compton family…
