Thomas Jefferson included the pursuit of happiness as an “inalienable right” when drafting the Declaration of Independence. This was not a new concept, rather a philosophical principle promoted centuries before his time. The Greek philosopher Aristotle (384 bce – 322 bce) considered happiness as the apex of human goodness and life. Each of us, however has a different view of what that means but Aristotle described it as a mean or midpoint between excess and deficiency. In other words, a balanced life that leads to goodness and moral virtue through habitual behavior.

Although the virtues to achieve happiness described by Aristotle are centuries old, they still have relevance today, including: temperance, friendliness, courage, truthfulness, shame, liberality, magnificence, wittiness, justice patience and generosity. Jefferson was aware of the shortcomings of mankind, writing of the pursuit, an aspiration, rather than the accomplishment as a practical addition to life and liberty.

To achieve moral virtue in all respects at all times is not only a daunting task, but as unrealistic as total perfection in everything we do and say. However, to be mindful of the value of these virtues can be a guide to help correct what Aristotle called vices or deficiencies when they occur. Not only is it helpful to hold a mirror to personal behavior, but also those in positions of authority. Present circumstances of national and international imbalance can cause a ripple effect on the local scene as well. The atrocities of inhumane actions generated by hatred, envy and righteous fanaticism do not align with a moral or virtuous life.

It is of critical importance in our communities that have a myriad of cultures and strong connections around the world to applaud moral virtues, condemn excesses and deficiencies while continuing a personal and community commitment to the pursuit of happiness.
