The Romans named the current month as “seven” (Septem in Latin) so why is it the ninth month of the calendar?

It turns out that time is not only flexible for Einstein’s Theory of Relativity, but changed in ancient Rome as well. Prior to the Julian Calendar of 153 BCE that extended the year to 365 days, March was the first month of the year. September, therefore, was the seventh. When the Roman Senate approved the new calendar, September changed position, but not title although distorted in meaning.

Time has a way of changing perspective of past events. For some, remembrance is colored by subsequent experience and knowledge while others, too young to have first-hand knowledge, can only reference through archives of visual, written or oral historical accounts.

One of the most horrific events on U.S. soil was perpetrated on September 11, 2001. The attack on and collapse of the World Trade Center towers was a shock to the country and world that, at the time, unified and solidified support for our society and its values. The clear and present danger triggered a fierce response. The passage of time has softened the wounds of that incident, but just as September remains as seven, so does the mention of the shorthand for the attack… 9-1-1.

Today we face a more insidious and subversive attack that is not only chilling due to its domestic nature, but outwardly hostile to the rule of law. Overwhelming response to 9-1-1 should be matched by a similar expression of dismay, horror and determination over the facts emerging from investigations of those involved in the January 6, 2021 attempt to disrupt and corrupt national election results.

The political season typically begins following the Labor Day holiday as summer activities fade. A challenge for all citizens in the coming year will be to maintain a tight grip on our right to vote and stand united against authoritarian rule, however shrouded by euphemisms and code words.

A vigorous defense is necessary to defeat attempts to undermine the foundation of a free and open society by distortion of past events. The passage of time may alter perceptions but not the meaning and significance of events. Just as September moved to another location on the calendar, the word retains its meaning. Let’s not lose sight of the significance of living in a democratic republic, no matter who tries to erase it.
