A television commercial selling life insurance speaks about three Ps that all focus on one aspect of their policies… price, price and price. It is an easily understood and remembered sales tool, although the substance, value and need for the product is not included in the tag line. Reducing complex and multifaceted concepts to basic and simple slogans is attractive but may obscure, mislead or omit important information necessary for a wise choice. The adage, “the devil is in the details” has been true as long as people have made promises to each other.

 

Politics is also an area prone to catchy slogans and simplistic rhetoric. It also has several subsequent Ps that can be reduced to slogans and catch phrases. However, rather than the loss of money and buyer’s remorse from a bad decision, these Ps can influence and span generations. Decisions at all levels of government influence the introduction, modification and impact of laws that affect all of us.

 

The paradox of political speech creates confusion. What appears to be strength through violent rhetoric is actually a cover for fear and weakness. Through use of selective and limited arguments, a plausible but separate set of “facts” emerge. Reality becomes relative without a common foundation for discussion and debate. Great divides in politics can often be found in its 3Ps… perception, perception and perception.

 

Even when basic facts are validated by all parties, attitudes of remedies are usually shaped by how different parties perceive a challenge.

 

A topic of much discussion and angst has been immigration pressure due to environmental and political distress throughout the world. Most observers agree that this poses a problem and admit current policies are inadequate to address it. However, the premise that immigration is a positive factor for the U.S. economy and vitality of its population is in dispute. This is where perception of who immigrates are and their contribution to our society is critical to any response and resolution, whether rhetorical or actionable.

 

With proper perspective and communication between observers, differences can be resolved. Without it, conclusions can be erroneous and lead to false and possibly dangerous action.

 

Effective communication without rancor offers an opportunity to realize that a different perspective will result in a different solution. It is up to all of us to retreat from purely defensive and reflexive behavior when confronted by a set of “facts” that appear to threaten our beliefs.  To “walk a mile in my shoes” is not such a bad idea. If the shoe fits or mildly uncomfortable, an adjustment could pave the way to a calm, friendly and peaceful environment.
