The origin of April Fools’ Day is a bit murky. Whether the moniker is a nod to the advent of spring and a new year following the vernal equinox, confusion when, in the 16th century, the Gregorian calendar declared January as the beginning of the year, replacing the Julian calendar, a reference to the inclusion of a nonexistent date, March 32, in the 1392 The Canterbury Tales by Chaucer or an extension of Hilaria, a Greco-Roman festival. The day is marked by levity and practical jokes.

In the midst of these tumultuous times, it’s not a bad idea to devote at least one moment to a bit of trivial hijinks. Some of the most memorable pranks:

  • a 1749 show in London advertising a show in which a man would squeeze into a small, “tavern bottle” and sing a tune while in it. A sold-out crowd rioted when, in breathless anticipation, they were greeted by an empty stage for the non-performance!
  • The 1959 campaign and election of a rhinoceros to the Sao Paulo city council. Upset by a trash problem, the campaign promoters named their ungulate candidate “Cacareco” (rubbish) and won by a landslide.
  • A 1957 British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) spoof documentary about an abundant spaghetti harvest in Switzerland featuring spaghetti trees bearing strands of pasta. Controversy followed since many believed the prank and asked where they could find spaghetti plants for personal cultivation.
  • Not satisfied with the 1957 prank, the BBC informed their 1976 listeners that, due to an unusual alignment of planets, gravity would be reduced on April 1, allowing those who jumped in the air to float.
  • You have to hand it to the Brits since again, in 2008, the BBC claimed that Antarctic penguins had begun to fly to South American rainforests.
  • Scotland follows a rowdy tradition of “Gowk Day” in which phony messages are sent via a “gowk” or fool. A chain of messages to “Hunt the Gowk” continues until the messenger realizes the subterfuge. Reminiscent of a snipe hunt!
  • In France, where it may have all began with the calendar change, paper signs of a fish or “kick me” may be surreptitiously attached to a victim’s back accompanied by the chant of “April Fish” indicating a young fish, easily fooled.

We, at Tri-City Voice wish our readers a joyful and fun April Fools’ Day, filled with laughter and lighthearted reprieve from the trials and tribulations of today. NO FOOLIN!
