A specific combination of temperature, humidity and air pressure results in dew drops. This visible appearance of water is often used as a benchmark for meteorologists when analyzing weather conditions and comfort levels. Some manufacturing processes are sensitive to dew point levels since chemical and biological actions may be modified by levels of moisture in the air. As a result, personal and business behavior can to some degree correlate with our weather environment, including its dew point.
Those living in a temperate environment with a moderate dew point will probably find areas with a very high or low dew point as extremely uncomfortable. Response is not only physical but can be psychological as well. For example, a hot, humid environment holds a significant amount of moisture that feels oppressive and retards bodily cooling actions such as evaporation of sweat.
Balance between different elements applies to other natural and human endeavors as well. The Greek philosopher, Plato, related personal happiness and comfort to coordination and function of three aspects of humanity – desire, passion and thought (control). When in alignment, these condense into reasonable and harmonious actions similar to a comfortable dew point. For most of us, the most comfortable range is in temperate climates with few extremes.
It is not only valuable, but essential, to understand, respect and celebrate the diversity of mankind. When viewed as a whole, we have the same basic needs, although different methods to achieve them.
In a “melting pot” of race, ethnicity, culture and adaptation, it may take some time to adapt to a moderate human dew point but we can all encourage this adjustment. This is especially important in this tumultuous political year with its appeal to passion without thought or control.
