As a recipient, source and disseminator of news, we receive press releases, comments and opinions from interested parties on a daily basis. Our job is to carefully review this information and publish relevant, interesting and factual content for our readers. An admitted bias is to promote the health and welfare of the communities we serve. Local people, venues, events and government take precedence when selecting articles for each issue.
The recent anniversary of the January 6, 2021 attempted coup of our national government should be a moment of reflection for all of us. Wide political divisions can be fodder for debate and compromise rather than physical violence. When we reach the point of singular attitudes that have no room for reasoned discourse, things have gone too far. This madness can infect all levels of society, consuming even local communities. Free speech and the free exchange of ideas should not only be tolerated, but encouraged. However, when a position becomes so strident, bullying and narrow to the point of exclusion, it must be recognized and rejected.
Tri-City voice endeavors to include opinions through Letters to the Editor and this column. We strive to avoid personal attacks and theories without substance. In an age of social media, we are occasionally referred to chat rooms and clearly biased reporting. Without substantial validation, we choose to omit such information and encourage our readers to use a healthy amount of skepticism when reviewing such information.
The game of “telephone” sends a message verbally though a chain of players. Usually, it ends up as a completely different statement. This is not the result of purposeful manipulation, rather the gap between reception and transmission. This phenomenon is well known in law enforcement when interviewing eyewitnesses who, when recounting events, can end up with vastly different stories. Another example is found in the magician’s arsenal of misdirection and sleight of hand. Without a common focus on the true movement of hands or props, unless you are fellow magician, the trick will be successful time after time.
We are not perfect and occasionally misinformation finds its way into our pages. However, it is our intent to maintain journalistic integrity and carefully examine material published to avoid hearsay, damaging distortion or innuendo.
