Teacher Shelby Aldinger’s class of kindergarten students’ eyes open wide as they see the vast array of scientific paraphernalia arranged throughout the multi-use room at Mattos Elementary. Fremont’s only Science magnet school, Mattos, is having a visit from Bob Boschert, aka “Mr. Science,” who will be spending two full days with all the classes to excite the students about the concepts of electricity and magnetism.

Superintendent’s Report: FUSD Superintendent Dr. James Morris remarked that Reader’s Digest has named Fremont as the “The Third Smartest City in America,” based on the low number of smokers and the high number of creative thinkers -- one out of every hundred residents has received patents for inventions. The Superintendent has recently launched a taped weekly cable television series “Community Conversations,” focusing on timely educational topics of interest to district students, staff and parents. Erin Enguero, a 2011 Washington High School graduate from Fremont, was recently selected as one of the recipients of the William Randolph Hearst/ CSU Trustees Award for Outstanding Achievement and named the Trustee William Hauck Scholar. The award recognizes one student from each of the 23 CSU campuses who has overcome adversity while demonstrating extraordinary personal and academic achievement as well as community involvement. Enguero, who attends San José State University (SJSU), was diagnosed with bilateral (both ears) genetic hearing loss. She first shared her personal story with the community, during a Fremont Unified School Board meeting in June 2011. ...

Eight years of vocal lessons in Hindustani music, recently culminated with a “graduation” benefit performance by Mission San Jose High School (MSJHS) senior, Erika Baral. The invitation-only event, for several hundred friends, family, and community members, was held at the Smith Center at Ohlone College on September 16.

This is a big year for the Sunol Glen Community Club (Sunol School’s parent/teacher organization), as they have been busily preparing for their major fall fundraiser of the school year -- the 20th Annual Sunol Glen Walk-a-thon on Friday, October 5. The fundraising efforts of the group are essential in helping to support and subsidize many activities and programs for the district’s students and staff.
Taking an active role, students play an important part by collecting pledges from family, community members and friends, and then walking laps at school. Pledges can be either for a specified amount per lap or a flat fee. ... Full story
