To Bump or Not to Bump
By Denny Stein
Remember when they said "Never Volunteer"? Well some travelers make a game out of volunteering - to be bumped from their seat on an overbooked airline flight. The New York Times has an on-line story (http://travel.nytimes.com/2011/04/10/travel/10pracbump.html) about flight gamers who reap big voucher rewards for giving up their seat. Some even parlay the vouchers into another bump and double their "money."
With more and more airlines reducing the number of flights, even to popular destinations, the chances of overbooking and bumping become more probable.
The article also has tips on how to avoid being involuntarily bumped from a flight, and how the airlines are required to compensate you should you be forced to give up your seat on an overbooked flight. Copy and paste the URL above into your browser, and fly smart.
