Local officials promote Meals on Wheels
Each year, Meals on Wheels highlights their invaluable service through a day of special delivery service by local mayors, elected officials and dignitaries. Accompanied by volunteers who donate their time and vehicles every week, all year long, these officials who are no strangers to community service, fit right in as they delivered hot meals and weekend nourishment on Friday, March 23, 2018. Recipients of Meals on Wheels, people who have difficulty traveling to stores and preparing a nourishing mid-day meal for themselves, are a welcome respite for those who may have limited social contact otherwise. In addition to regular meals, those with special nutrition needs can request vegetarian, renal or diabetic menu options. Although some mayors and councilmembers are regular community service volunteers, greeting a mayor, councilmember or dignitary at their door was a special treat for many.
Among the elected officials participating were: Fremont Mayor Lily Mei, Newark Mayor Alan Nagy, Newark Vice Mayor Michael Hannon, Fremont Councilmember Rick Jones w/wife Dana Fremont Councilmember Raj Salwan, Fremont Councilmember David Bonaccorsi, Leah Doyle-Stevens representing Alameda County Supervisor Scott Haggerty and Daren Young with Dryco and Niles Rotary.
