New playground is in the works
Submitted By Teresa Meyer
Children and families in the San Leandro area will soon have a new playground to call their own.
The playground will be installed in Warden Park, located in the Davis West neighborhood and will include several new play structures and amenities. According to city officials, funding for the playground was secured by leveraging more than $120,000 in state grant funding from the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD), coupled with a contribution of city park Òin lieu fundsÓ derived from other private development projects.
ÒI am so excited to announce this exciting project at Warden Park,Ó said Mayor Pauline Russo Cutter. ÒThis new playground is part of a broader effort by the city to upgrade various local parks all across San Leandro to improve the quality of life for our residents and their families, making it easier to get out and get moving.Ó
When completed, the playground will include separate play structures for preschoolers and school-aged children. The footprint of the existing playground will also be expanded, and will include the addition of a spinner, a modern-day merry-go-round, new swings, a see-saw and diggers.
Amenities for the playground were selected by students at Wilson Elementary School along with feedback from the Recreation and Parks Commission and the Davis West community. To prepare for the new installations, the site was closed Feb. 1 and tentatively will re-open in late spring or early summer.
