Experience the taste of Laos at community BBQ
Submitted By Carolyn Berke
After a completely and utterly delicious experience last year, Niles Pie Company is once again hosting a ÒLaotian BBQ.Ó Toto Chittharath is the master of the grill for this traditional Laotian barbecue dinner on Sunday, July 16, cooking up beef, pork, fish, and veggie options with an array of spicy and tame dipping sauces.
A professional chef and one of the founding owners of Niles Pie and a staff member for over two years, Chittharath was born in Laos but grew up in the Bay Area. HeÕll be bring the native flavors of his homeland to Union City in a big communal barbecue set up at Niles Pie where staff will do all the cooking, and everyone else does all the eating!
The menu includes Ping Moo tong Ð grilled pork belly marinated with garlic, salt, and fish sauce; Ping Paa Ð grilled fish stuffed with limegrass, ginger, and dill; and Ping nuea Ð grilled beef marinated with garlic, soy sauce, sugar. Accompanying dipping sauces will be Jeow Somm Ð lime base sauce with fish sauce, Thai chili, garlic, cilantro, and dill; and Jeow Mak Len Ð tomato base sauce with garlic, cilantro, and Thai chili. Spring rolls, barbecued yams, sticky rice (Khao Niew), Lao Papaya Salad (tham mak hoom), and khao niao mamuang for dessert Ð coconut sticky rice served with slices of mangos and glaze coconut milk sauce Ð round out the meal.
Join us at our communal tables for a neighborly and fun evening (no corkage, BYOB as always) or take your deliciousness to go and make your own fun. The price is $35 for adults and $15 for kids. Pre-sales are encouraged, as it helps with planning, but we try not to turn away last second folks. For pre-reservations, visit www.nilespie.com/products/laotian-bbq.
