The exciting 50thÊSeason continues! The October Unity Concert kicked off the themes of diversity and unity, and now the orchestra concentrates onÊA Celebration of Fremont,Êwhich willÊbe presented by the Fremont Symphony Orchestra (FSO) onÊSunday, March 30 at Smith Center, Ohlone College in Fremont. FSOÊwill evokeÊFremont then and nowÊthrough a selection of musical vignettes representing both theÊcommunityÕs historyÊand the current energy of its citizens.

The performance will beginÊwith silent film pianist extraordinaireÊJonÊMirsalisÊpaying homage to the beginnings of the film industry in Niles withÊSon of a GunÊstarring Broncho Billy.ÊNext, the Niles CanyonÊconnection to the intercontinental railroad will be honoredÊwith StraussÕs lively polkaÊBahn FreiÊ(ÒClearÊthe TrackÓ).

FSOÕs commitment to youth and artisticÊeducationÊwill be represented by cellistÊConnorÊKim, winner of FSOÕs 2012 Young Artist Competition, playing AntoninÊDvorakÕs gorgeous Cello Concerto. Musical Visions, a multi-mediaÊpresentation, will celebrate 40 years of FSOÕs ChildrenÕs Concerts with theÊFremont Unified School District, showcasing not only original compositionsÊfrom theÊwinners of FSO's 2013 Young Composer Competition, arranged byÊEmmy-Award-winning composer Jeff Beal (Monk, House of Cards, etc.) but also the corresponding filmÊcreations of FremontÊ6th-graders, edited by professional videographer JeremyÊKnight.

Finally, the symphony will segueÊinto Aaron CoplandÕs 20th century American masterpiece,ÊBilly theÊKid. Dancers fromÊDiablo BalletÊwill perform the famousÊSweetheart pas de deux from the ballet.

ÒIt is extraordinary that Fremont has been home to a world-class symphony orchestra, now in its 50th season,Ó says FSO Music Director and Conductor Gregory VanÊSudmeier. "TheÊMarch 30Êperformance is a celebration of our GoldenÊAnniversary and is a strong testament to the heart and soul a symphony bringsÊto thisÊcommunity. It is also dedicated to the people of the Tri-CitiesÊand their history. We are in this together and for each other.Ó

Also in March, FSOÊcontinues its long tradition of freeÊChildrenÕs Concerts, providing an opportunity for several thousand school-ageÊstudents in the community to hearÊlive symphonic music. OnÊTuesday, March 25, concerts for 4th-, 5th-Êand 6th-grade students will be performed at Ohlone CollegeÕs Epler Gymnasium.ÊThe concerts willÊfeature compositions by local elementary school students, selectedÊfrom submissions to this yearÕs Young Composer Competition.
