A new library for Hayward?

Submitted By Suzanne Barba

Since Hayward is the fifth largest city in the Bay Area, youÕd think the cityÕs main library would be just as large. According to HaywardÕs government website, itÕs not. When the current library was built in 1951, the cityÕs population was around 14,000. Now, with about 150,000 residents, the library is bursting at the seams. To help alleviate this issue, the city is gathering to discuss plans for a new building.

The League of Women Voters Eden Area will be holding a Òhot topicÓ informational meeting to discuss the potential plans for constructing a new main Hayward library building. The meeting will inform attendees about how construction would be funded and if other public buildings in the city need to be included in that funding plan.

The meeting will be held on Oct. 25, at Hayward City Hall. The Òhot topicÓ discussion will inform attendees about the pros and cons of the project. Presenters will lead the discussion and open the floor to community members who have questions or comments. Hayward conducted a recent community survey on the subject and those results will be shared at the meeting.

ÒOur speakers are our resource people,Ó said Evelyn Cormier, chair of the League committee that planned and is putting on the event. ÒWe hope interested community members will ask questions and give their opinions on this important subject,Ó she said.

Light refreshments will be available for attendees. An RSVP is required to attend the free discussion. This League informational meeting is co-sponsored by the Friends of the Hayward Library and American Association of University Women Hayward/Castro Valley Chapter.
