Scholarships available for Tri-City students of Chinese discent
Submitted By Fran Gin
The South Bay Chinese Club was formed in 1965 in order to preserve the culture and customs of the Chinese heritage, to foster and encourage better understanding of civic responsibilities and the American way of life, and to promote the general welfare of the community. In 1984 the Club formed the South Bay Chinese Service Club, a nonprofit, philanthropic organization.
The primary purpose of the South Bay Chinese Service Club is to award scholarships to graduating high school seniors of Chinese descent. Only students residing in Fremont, Newark and Union City or children of club members in good standing are eligible to apply. The actual number of scholarships will be determined by the amount of donations received. Last year, our organization awarded three $2,000 scholarships, two $1,000 scholarships, three $500 scholarships and five $250 scholarships for a total of $10,750 in awards.
In evaluating the applications the scholarship committee will consider unweighted grade point average, school activities, special achievements, community service activities, and a personal essay.
