Assembly approves resolution celebrating India Independence Day
Submitted By Jeff Barbosa
The California State Assembly passed Assemblyman Bob Wieckowski's (D-Fremont) resolution to celebrate India Independence Day. The resolution was approved by voice vote.
Immediately following the passage of Assembly Concurrent Resolution 115, Wieckowski introduced India's Consul General in San Francisco, Nagesh Rao Parthasarathi, on the Assembly floor and presented the resolution to him.
"I am proud to represent a district with such a large Indo-American population because our district's diversity exposes us to a vibrant range of cultures," Wieckowski said. "As the state with the highest number of Indo Americans, California benefits from the varied contributions they make to our society."
India gained its independence on August 15, 1947. On that day Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru gave his Tryst with Destiny speech proclaiming India's independence. Today, this national holiday in India is celebrated by one billion people there and many others around the world. |
