Niles Canyon open house meetings
Amid much controversy, Caltrans is proposing the State Route 84 Niles Canyon II Safety Project from half a mile east of Palomares Road to just east of Sunol. "Improvements" include 8-ft. shoulders, shoulder rumble strips, and improved sight distances. To construct the proposed improvements, the project would require cutting some uphill slopes, filling some downhill slopes, and building retaining walls at these locations totaling 1.8 miles in length.
Caltrans has justified the project as a safety measure; "State Route 84, Niles Canyon Road, is experiencing a significant number of collisions. The California Department of Transportation's records show that between 1999 and 2009 there were 455 traffic collisions, 10 of which resulted in fatalities and 237 of which resulted in injuries along State Route 84 in Niles Canyon."
One public meeting remains to review the original project designs, proposed changes and officially submit written comments on the project before the comment period for the Draft Environmental Impact Report closes Friday, August 5, 2011.
