Fuhs dominant, Mission wins Section 3 crown

Submitted By Ed Hugo

Brandon Fuhs was on his game as he pitched and hit the Mission San Jose Little League Senior all stars to the Section 3 championship. Fuhs pitched a complete game shutout allowing only a first-inning single as MSJLL dominated Union City National (UCN) by a score of 11-0.

Fuhs and his teammates provided all the runs he would need in the second inning when they scored the initial three runs of the game. Fuhs led off the inning with a long double to left centerfield and moved to third on a base hit by James Gaffey. Devon Jones followed with a base hit of his own to drive home Fuhs with the game's first run. Reid Marion was up next and singled to drive home Gaffey. The final run of the inning came on a perfectly-executed squeeze bunt by Wyatt Ott which allowed Marion to score.

After being shut down in the third inning, the MSJLL offense exploded as they scored eight runs in the fourth inning. With two of the first three batters making outs, it looked like it may be another scoreless inning for MSJLL, but the next eight batters reached base and, by the time the dust had settled, eight runs had crossed home plate extending MSJLL's lead to 11-0. Jeff Chu, Brandon Facha, Fuhs and Marion all came up with clutch two-out hits that drove in runs. MSJLL also benefited from two errors made by the UCN infield.

With the game well in hand, Fuhs locked down the victory with a quick three-up, three-down final inning. For the game, Fuhs allowed only one base runner, walked none and struck out six, averaging 12 pitches per inning. MSJLL defense supported Fuhs by playing its second errorless game in the three-game tournament.

Next up for the MSJLL senior all-stars is the Division 2 Northern California tournament in Stockton beginning Saturday, July 23, as they go against teams representing five other sections from Northern California.
