The Flame of Hope

On June 16, officers, explorers, citizen volunteers, and family members from the Milpitas Police Department accepted the Special Olympics Torch from the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office at Montague Expressway and South Main Street. Participants ran a 3.9 mile route through the City of Milpitas, which concluded at the Milpitas Police Department.
With over 14,000 persons with intellectual disabilities in Northern California, the Special Olympics offer all eligible persons the opportunity to participate in the summer games. As of Monday, June 10, law enforcement officers and Special Olympic athletes carried the Special Olympics Torch through the streets of Monterey, Santa Cruz, San Benito, and Santa Clara counties.
At the conclusion of the Milpitas leg of Special Olympics Torch run, the torch passed to the Fremont Police Department for their leg of the torch run. On June 24, the torch will be at University of California at Davis for opening ceremonies of the 2011 Northern California Special Olympic Games. |
