GG Bridge officials consider bike speed limit

Submitted By AP Wire Service

SAN FRANCISCO (AP), Apr 20 - Golden Gate Bridge officials are considering putting the brakes on bicyclists who use the span.

A plan expected to go before the bridge's Building and Operations Committee on Thursday would impose a speed limit of 10 mph on bicyclists. The Marin Independent Journal reports that the limit would drop to 5 mph in construction areas and around the bridge's towers.

Violators could be hit with a $100 fine.

There is currently no speed limit, and bridge officials say some bikers have been clocked going over 20 mph.

Speed was cited as a factor in 39 percent of the 164 bicycle crashes on the span between 2000 and 2009.

The proposal would likely go before the bridge's full board of directors on May 13 if it is approved by the Building and Operations Committee.
