A casualty of winter

Among other casualties of recent rainstorms, a tree fell at the Shinn Park on Tuesday, March 22. This victim of rain and age was a bit of history; a pecan tree planted in 1876 by James Shinn. Oak root fungus and rain soaked soil combined to topple this mighty tree. Mildred Oliver, historian for The Friends of Heirloom Flowers Garden Club was in the cottage at Shinn Park when the tree fell over and said it felt like an earthquake.
Friends of Heirloom Flowers is a volunteer organization that plants and maintains the gardens at this historical Fremont park every Tuesday between 10 a.m. and noon. Garden enthusiasts are always welcome.
