Avalon Schultz has worked for the City of Union City for more than five years, joining as an Assistant Planner in October, 2005, and promoted to Associate Planner in June, 2008.
She has demonstrated an exceptional ability to communicate with the public and guide them through the development process and represents the City with professionalism in her contact with the public, other City departments, the Planning Commission and City Council. Citizens and colleagues enjoy a positive experience.
Schultz always strives to prepare the best possible project and highly literate staff reports for the Planning Commission and City Council to review and consider and is currently completing a Master of Urban Planning degree at San Jose State University.
Avalon Schultz was honored by Union City City Council on February 8, 2011, as the 2010 General Government Employee of the Year.
Victor Derting served with the United States Army "Rangers" for four years, receiving 10 awards, and attaining the rank of "Team Leader" for Special Operations Command, before joining Union City Police Department in April, 1999.
On joining, he served in Patrol and was assigned to the Investigations Section from July 2001 to July 2004 and was promoted to the rank of Police Corporal in November, 2009. He has also been a Department Firearms Instructor since 2004 and served as a member of the Department's Special Weapons and Tactics (S.W.A.T) Team, attaining the rank of Assistant Team Leader.
Derting has served with distinction in all his assignments, proving to be a tenacious and determined corporal and investigator, conducting thorough and exemplary investigations of complex criminal matters. He has received 10 commendations from the community, fellow law enforcement professionals, allied law enforcement agencies and from Union City Police Department for his work ethic, thoroughness and his concerned, caring attitude and service. He also served as President of the Union City Police Officers' Association for 2004 and 2005.
His commitment to the community, the City of Union City, and the Union City Police Department was also recognized when he was selected as the "Officer of the Year" for 2004 and 2005.
Corporal Victor Derting was honored by Union City City Council on February 8, 2011, as the 2010 Public Safety Employee of the Year.
Union City resident Jesus Garcia joined the City of Union City as a Program Aide in the Leisure Services Department in May, 1994, was promoted to Program Aide II in May, 1995, Project Specialist in January, 2001, Program Manager in May, 2001, Assistant Coordinator in June, 2005, and to Recreation Program Coordinator in January, 2007.
He has been responsible for creating both the quarterly Activity Guide and the annual Farmers' Market and Summer Concert Series poster for Leisure Services. Both the guide and poster have won awards from the California Parks and Recreation Society of Northern California.
Garcia was instrumental in helping start both the Discover Arts Afterschool and Discover Arts Summer Camp programs for Leisure Services and is the Department's "resident artist," who has created murals throughout Union City in such locations as the Teen Workshop.
He has continually provided superior quality programming for his patrons out of the Kennedy Community Center and supported the Leisure Services Department and other City employees.
Jesus Garcia was honored by Union City City Council on February 8, 2011, as the 2010 Public Works/Leisure Services Employee of the Year.
