Hayward Air Rally 2011
Submitted By Chris Verbil
The 47th annual Hayward Air Rally will be held on Friday, June 10, 2011. This year's destination is again Bend, Oregon, with a mandatory landing and fuel stop in Redding, California. The awards dinner and presentations will be held on Saturday evening on June 11 in Bend.
The Rally is a 500-mile Visual Flight Rules cross-country challenge, flown in two legs. It is not a speed event; fuel management and navigation skills determine the entrant's score. There are penalty points for incorrect identification of checkpoints, for each second of deviation from their planned time and for each tenth-of-a-gallon deviation from fuel estimates. The lowest score wins.
All aircraft types are accepted and all certificated pilots and guests are welcome. This is a great opportunity to test flying skills and have fun.
This year's Rally proceeds will help fund three fully-paid scholarships for deserving youth to attend this summer's EAA's Young Eagles Academy in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. We plan to select one scholarship winner each from the Hayward, Redding, and Bend areas. A portion of the entry fee is considered a charitable donation to the Hayward Air Rally, Inc., a non-profit entity with IRS 501(c)(3) status.
The entry application is available online at www.hwdairrally.org. EAA members receive a $25 discount on the entry fee.
