2011 State of the County:
A round of applause goes to our parish school choir for a job well done in the 2011 State of the County on January 25 at the Santa Clara County Governmental Center in downtown San Jose. The school choir, led by Sr. Divine Caabay, AR, was invited to sing the national anthem during the installation of Dave Cortese, President of County of Santa Clara Board of Supervisors. A special thanks to Milpitas Vice Mayor Pete McHugh for escorting the students and parents to the event. Our school is very proud and honored to have been a part of this special celebration. Great job, SJBS Choir!
Eighth Grade Retreat:
The St. John's School eighth graders attended their annual retreat in the Santa Cruz Mountains on the weekend of January 21-23. Known as the LINC - "Life in Christ" - retreat, it gave the students the opportunity to reflect on the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Through a variety of activities, the students were able to deepen their relationship with Jesus. Morality skits and situations prompted the students to answer the question, "What Would Jesus Do?" if placed in situations and challenges familiar to today's teenagers. The eighth graders also experienced quiet prayer activities, shared affirmations with each other, and witnessed a re-enaction of the Passion and Death of Jesus. The students also enjoyed a "storytelling session" in which they remembered events in their time together that helped them bond together to heal and inspire them in times of difficulty. The retreat team, led by Stanley Horyza, was comprised of youth and young adults who have participated in weekend retreats for a number of years.
