Theatre: Almost, Maine
A hilarious and surreal look at the uncertainty, wonder, and joy of love
California Conservatory Theatre presents "Almost, Maine," a contemporary romantic comedy set in a small town in northern Maine that doesn't quite exist. On a cold, clear, moonless Friday night in the middle of winter, all is not quite what it seems in the remote, mythical town of Almost, Maine. As the Northern Lights hover in the star-filled sky above, residents of Almost find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and often hilarious ways. Knees are bruised; hearts are broken. Love is lost, found, and confounded. However, the bruises heal and the hearts mend...almost.
First developed in 2002 at The Cape Cod Theater Project and the Portland Stage Company, "Almost, Maine" opened off-Broadway in early 2006 at the Daryl Roth Theater. The play was, and continues to be, widely praised for its smart, funny take on life and love.
Says director Ken Sonkin, "This play is an effervescent yet deeply felt tragicomedy; a romance couched in reality that features a dash of the absurd. Playwright John Cariani weaves an undertone of melancholy and yearning and a touch of magical realism into a series of tales that happen on a single night in the play. The Northern Lights or the Aurora Borealis, a phenomenon sometimes seen in the northernmost regions of the world, have been around since the earth formed an atmosphere. The lights shine when the suns rays get trapped in the earth's magnetic field. Each of the oh-so-human relationships in the play are touched by this magical occurrence, reminding us of the unexpected challenges and joyfulness that love brings."
