Ohlone to host softball clinic
By Sanjna Shukla
With softball season right around the corner, Ohlone College is hosting its Third Annual Coaches Clinic on Saturday, Feb. 5, from 9 a.m. to noon. Donna Runyon, head coach of the Renegades' softball team, will be leading the clinic by going over various technical skills. The program includes hitting and pitching techniques and defensive drills that will be demonstrated by the Ohlone coaching staff and players.
Considering that a Lady Renegade has earned the Conference Pitcher of the Year award for the past five years, Coach Runyon has plenty of experience under her belt. Also, two-time Conference Pitcher of the Year Kelly Colker was coached by and played for Runyon until the 2009 season. Coach Runyon will go over the mechanics and techniques of pitching at the clinic.
Runyon's team had a very successful season last year, as the Renegades were Coast Conference North (CCN) champions for the eighth consecutive year. With an impressive conference record of 14-2, the Renegades made it to the postseason for the 18th time in 2010. But despite the successful run in last year's regular season, they suffered a heartbreaking loss to Feather River in the first round of the playoffs prevented them from continuing their playoff run.
There are high hopes for the team to excel in not only the season, but also during the postseason this year. Ohlone will begin its pursuit of a ninth straight CCN title beginning on Feb. 8, when they lace up the cleats for the first regular season game of 2011, a home match against Modesto Junior College.
The talented coaching staff and players will lead the Coaches Clinic on February 5, at the Ohlone College softball field. Admission is $25 per person. For more details visit their website at http://www.ohlone.edu/org/athletics/softball/cliniccoaches.html.
