Newark wrestlers have success
By Giovanni Albanese Jr.
Newark Memorial High School wrestlers took part in a number of tournaments over the past weekend to kick off their competition in the new year. Participating at the Doc Buchanan Invitational in Clovis, the Mat Classic at Granada High School in Livermore and the Napa Valley Girls Classic, the Cougars flexed their muscle all over.
Cougars' standout wrestler - with some national recognition for his impressive record to date - Victor Pereira continued to prove his clout in grappling, finishing second at the Doc B Invite in the 152-pound weight class.
As a team, the Cougars finished 29th at the Doc B Invite, with fellow Mission Valley Athletic League foes James Logan (31st) and American (56th) high schools finished behind them. (For Logan, Matthew Haney (215) finished fifth; American's Daniel Luty (160) finished sixth.)
In the Mat Classic at Granada High, Pereira's teammates Tung Le, Anthony Rubio and Trevor Hubby all finished third in their respective weight class; Elmer Hamidy took a top-five finish back to Newark, finishing fifth.
Lisa Tran, Mikka Anderson and Katie Burdick all finished in the top 10 at the Napa Valley Girls Classic. Burdick led the way, topping her weight class; Anderson finished in the top five with a fourth-place finish in her weight class; and Tran took eighth.
Newark's Lady Cougars - along with Fremont's Irvington High girls - will be at Novato High on Saturday, Jan. 15, for the Hornets Nest Invite. Newark's boys - along with James Logan- will be at Clayton Valley High School for their invitational tourney.
Newark boys will then take part in "The Dream" at Mt. Tamalpais High on Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 17, before MVAL play resumes on Wednesday, Jan. 19. Log onto the Tri-City Voice Sports website, http://sports.tricityvoice.com, for the full prep wrestling schedule. |
