Local high school girls soccer teams wrapped up their preseason play last week (Monday, Dec. 6, through Saturday, Dec. 11) and began to gain confidence in their abilities as a team as the regular season approaches.

On Dec. 6, Fremont's American High ripped San Lorenzo's Redwood Christian High, 5-0, while John F. Kennedy and Moreau Catholic high schools fought to a 1-1 draw, with each team scoring a late goal. Mission San Jose High's Lady Warriors met the Dougherty Valley High Lady Wildcats on Dec. 6 as well, and fell 3-1, despite scoring a quick goal in the first half.

A day later, on Tuesday, Dec. 7, girls soccer action continued with Amador Valley High tying James Logan High's Lady Colts, 1-1, holding each other scoreless after the half. Washington High didn't fare nearly as well, getting run over by San Ramon Valley High, 7-2; Mission Valley Athletic League's teams went winless on the day when Newark Memorial High was dropped 2-0 by Pittsburg High at home.

MVAL's regular season for girls soccer begins Tuesday, Dec. 14, with Mission San Jose (2-2-1) facing undefeated Kennedy(8-0-1) at Tak Fudenna Stadium.

In Hayward Area Athletic League girls soccer action, Moreau bounced back from its 1-1 draw to Kennedy on Monday with a 5-0 romp over Tennyson High School on Wednesday, Dec. 8. Tennyson continued to allow goals at an alarming rate on Friday, Dec. 10, giving up five the home side, San Lorenzo High. However, the Lady Lancers got its offense in gear, putting three in the back of the net in a 5-3 loss, showing signs of life.

Tennyson did a goal worse in its next match, a Saturday, Dec. 11, roadie against Ygnacio Valley High. The Lady Warriors handed the Lady Lancers a 6-0 defeat. In other action, Mt. Eden High edged out Redwood Christian, 1-0, in a Friday afternoon match.

On the boys side of soccer preseason matches, in MVAL play on Monday, James Logan continued its solid play in 2010 with a 4-0 victory over Foothill High. Gustavo Ulloa had two goals and an assist to lead the way for the Colts.

Washington High came away from a road contest at Northgate High on Wednesday, Dec. 8, with a 1-1 draw. Also on Wednesday, Mission San Jose went to Livermore High and left with a 4-0 loss on its record.

In boys play in the HAAL, Bishop O'Dowd High topped Hayward High, 4-1 at home on Tuesday, Dec. 7. Tennyson's boys, unlike its girls soccer club, was on the winning side last week, topping Moreau Catholic 3-0 on Tuesday. A day later, Wednesday, Dec. 8, Tennyson fell 7-0 to Ygnacio Valley.

Also on Wednesday, Mt. Eden and San Leandro played to a scoreless draw. Tennyson played a third straight game on Thursday, Dec. 9, a home match with San Lorenzo and came away with a 4-0 win.
