A registered sex offender was arrested recently on suspicion of sexually assaulting a two-year-old girl. The incident happened on Wednesday, December 1 at 1 p.m., inside the "Dollar Tree" store located at 1720 Decoto Road in Union City. The suspect was a stranger to the victim and family.

36-year-old Eugene Melendres Ramos allegedly grabbed the victim when she went to return a ribbon to the Christmas aisle. This victim was in the company of her grandmother and aunt who noticed that the child was missing after less than a minute. Soon the grandmother found the child pinned down by the suspect in the next aisle. The child had her pants and diaper removed and was being straddled by the suspect. The suspect had pulled his pants and underwear down and was sexually assaulting the child. The suspect fled the store while pulling up his pants as the grandmother and aunt chased him. Several other customers also chased the suspect through the shopping complex.

A solicitor in front of the store chased and tackled the suspect. Fortunately, a BART police officer was nearby and stopped when he was flagged down by the small group holding the suspect. Ramos has been arrested and booked for kidnapping, rape, sexual acts with a child, and false imprisonment.
