Prep basketball and soccer starts up

By Giovanni Albanese Jr.

With most all the North Coast Section tournaments for the fall season nearing an end, and virtually all local teams eliminated from championship contention -- save a team or two -- the focus has now shifted to the winter athletic seasons, featuring basketball, soccer and wrestling for boys and girls.

A week ago, a number of preseason scrimmages were scheduled in basketball as the season tips off for real over this coming week of Nov. 22 through Nov. 27. One game that did count in the standings last week was a battle between the Tennyson and Fremont (Oakland) high schools' girls basketball teams. Tennyson prevailed in the Thursday, Nov. 18, game, 52-30.

In soccer, there were a number of scrimmages (scores can be found on the TCV website at sports.tricityvoice.com) along with several that counted. On Wednesday, Nov. 17, both the boys and girls teams for John F. Kennedy High got on the pitch for the first time in 2010 and came away with wins: the girls, a 4-0 win at Tennyson with Hailey Chalfant leading the way with two goals; boys, a 6-2 win vs. Encinal High.

In other boys action on Nov. 17, Pinole Valley went to Mt. Eden and played to a scoreless draw; Mission San Jose one-upped Dublin at home, 1-0; Moreau Catholic and Washington settled for a 1-1 draw; and Newark Memorial fell 1-0 at home to San Lorenzo High.

Girls soccer took center stage on Thursday, Nov. 18, with Ygnacio Valley High topping Hayward 1-0 on the road, and Washington and San Leandro played to a 1-1 draw in Fremont. Kennedy's girls team played on Friday, Nov. 19, and followed up its 4-0 win on Wednesday with a 5-0 win over Redwood Christian at home. Five different Lady Titans scored in the winning effort.

Also on Friday, in boys action, Mission San Jose went to Amador Valley and fell 5-1; Hayward went to Irvington and played to a 2-2 draw; and Newark Memorial hosted Arroyo and shut them out, 3-0. And on Saturday, Nov. 20, Tennyson got a road draw, 0-0 at Piedmont, while James Logan High earned a 4-1 win on the road over San Leandro. Juan Carlos Romero-Pacheco scored a pair for the Colts in the win.
