Newark Fire, a U-10 girls travel soccer club, earned a place in the Northern California State Cup Tournament semifinals with a dramatic overtime win over the Menlo Park Strikers in the quarterfinals in Sacramento this past weekend.
Newark took a 2-0 lead on goals by Angelique Valenzuela and Aracelli Hinojosa, with Hannah Gamez getting the assist on Hinojosa's goal. Newark went up 3-1 after Gamez scored from a Rachel Bruckner assist, taking the two-goal lead into halftime.
In the second half, Menlo Park scored three unanswered goals to take a 4-3 lead before Trinity Castillo took a shot from outside the box to tie the score. It would hold at 4-4 until the end of regulation, forcing extra time. In sudden death overtime, Gamez scored the winner thanks to an assist from Sam Ocegueda to seal the dramatic victory.
Goalkeeper Lissette Mason made several outstanding saves throughout the game to preserve the win. In addition, Isabella Garcia, Sara Jones, Sara Buffey, Bri Motta and Natalia Sanchez all played excellent soccer during this weekend tournament.
"It was an exciting game, and outstanding win. The girls played an outstanding game, in this game as well as the previous game against the Placer United Prestige," said coach Bruckner.
Newark continues league action this weekend in San Ramon, and finishes the league season at home against Dublin on Sunday, Nov. 14. Newark will play its State Cup semifinals game against the Mustang Untied from Danville on Sunday, Nov. 21.
