Lace up your sneakers for a great cause! "The 6th Annual Happy Fish Run 4 Education" takes place in the morning of Sunday, October 10 at Lake Elizabeth in Fremont's Central Park.
With choices ranging from a 5k walk/run, and 10k run, to a 1/4 and 1/2 mile kids' runs, the fun-filled event promises to have something for everyone. This day of community fitness supports a great cause, by raising money for the Fremont Education Foundation's Guy Emanuele Sports Fund. All participants receive an official event t-shirt, refreshments, finisher ribbon, and goodies from sponsors. Awards are given for overall male and female, and first, second and third places by age division, for both males and females.
The event was created in 2005 when former teacher, Liz Elliott, organizer of the run and owner of Happy Fish Swim School, wanted to do something to encourage fitness as well as help out schools. "My business partner and I grew up in Fremont. We were active in sports and I benefited from participation in sports. It taught me team building and how to be a good student."
She was directed to the Fremont Educational Foundation. "Their Guy Emanuele Sports Fund (GESF) was a perfect fit, working with their support on the Happy Fish Run 4 Education, in order to provide help for 'in-need' students," adds Elliott.
The Guy Emanuele Sports Fund (GESF) provides scholarships to high school students in FUSD who wish to participate in extracurricular sports or cheerleading, but cannot afford to without financial help.
"The Foundation was inspired by Guy Emanuele's mission to help support the schools and make sure no student is precluded from participating in After School Sports for financial reasons," says Dave Bonaccorsi, Vice President of Fremont Education Foundation. "It's important that all students have the same opportunity to participate in sports activities."
Last year, the Guy Emanuele Sports Fund was also able to provide a $10,000 emergency grant to keep the lights on at night soccer games for all FUSD boys and girls soccer teams, without which the soccer teams would not have been able to finish their seasons. Plus, with generous donations from the Run 4 Education, GESF helps to fund after school basketball leagues, in grades 4-6, for both boys and girls at all 27 elementary schools in the Fremont Unified School District. And, junior high sports teams are assisted with grants for uniforms, referee fees, and equipment costs.
To add to the festivities at the "Happy Fish Run 4 Education," a Family Fitness Expo will make it easy to pick up helpful tips on healthy lifestyles. As another incentive for participation, the Learning Bee Learning Center is offering an "Elementary School Challenge!" The Fremont Unified School District (FUSD) elementary school with the most participants in all of the events wins money for their school sports programs. So, remember to write the name of the elementary school you represent on your registration form!
This year's fundraising goal is $20,000. Even if you can't attend, consider making a tax deductible donation. For more information or to register for the run visit www.HappyFishRun4Education.com.
Special thanks go to Learning Bee Learning Center, Fremont Bank Foundation and Bay Aerials Gymnastics for their continued contributions and sponsorship over the years.
