Woofstock brings out the canine love

By Julie Grabowski

Pull out your sneakers and dog leashes and get ready for a Saturday morning walk like no other. Furry Friends Rescue (FFR) invites you and your canine friends to the Woofstock Tail Waggin' Walk and Picnic on October 9 at Fremont's Lake Elizabeth. Collect pledges and complete the Groovy 3K PAW Power Walk to help save the lives of abandoned dogs and cats.

Furry Friends Rescue is a non-profit companion animal rescue organization founded in 1998. Comprised entirely of volunteers, FFR works to save dogs and cats destined to be euthanized in Bay Area shelters. They provide veterinary care including examination, immunizations, and spay/neuter, then place animals in loving foster homes until they can be adopted. With no shelter or office, FFR fosters approximately 120 dogs and cats year round, and has saved over 12,000 animals since their founding.

The walk is a leisurely, companionable outing around the lake, followed by a doggie madness after-party. Enjoy far out Woodstock music, vegetarian lunch and treats for dogs, raffles and silent auction, and pet portraits by Posh Pooch Portraits. Watch dog demos by K-9 Specialized Training and Consulting (K-9 STAC), and see how your dog rates in contests for Best Talent, Coolest Hippie, Prettiest Flower Child, Best Speak, Unique Mix, and Howl-loween Costume. VIP judges include Dr. Greg Martinez, author of "Dog Dish Diet;" Steve Waterhouse of the Bay Area News Group; and Julie A. Bjelland, dog trainer and author of "Imagine Life with a Well-Behaved Dog." There is a $5 entry fee for those who didn't participate in the walk.

If your household is looking for its first pet or eager to add on, Adoption Showcases will have animals from local shelters and rescues like Tri-City Animal Shelter, Hayward Animal Shelter, Golden Gate Basset Rescue, and Amazing Greys Retired Racers. Various sponsor booths will be on hand including Aenlivon Pet Care, Diamond Pet Foods, The Woof Pack, VCA All About Pets, and VCA Specialty Animal Hospitals.

According to the FFR website, "Our successful team is based on core values of friendship, integrity and mutual respect for each other as a team. Our shared love for our furry friends binds us to our common goal. FFR's primary focus is to utilize our talents and energies in innovative ways to save even more innocent lives by expanding our Foster Home Network while we pursue funding for our ultimate goal, a Bay Area Safe Haven Sanctuary!"

"A key part of FFR's philosophy and practice is to build alliances and network with other reputable shelters, rescue organizations, veterinarians, doggie day cares, trainers, media and caring companies. By working together, we can save more lives together and help to eliminate the unnecessary deaths of so many adoptable animals while enhancing the lives of people as well."

Individual entry for the Tail Waggin' Walk is $20 if received by October 5th, and $25 afterwards. Team Leaders pay $20 and each team member $15. The entry fee will be waived if $100 or more is collected in pledges. Registration forms can be printed from the FFR website and mailed in, or brought along the day of the event. Registration includes a Limited Edition Diane Wat Design T-shirt, doggie bandana, picnic, goodie bag, and entry in contests. If you cannot join in the walk, please consider making a donation to help save the lives of so many animals in need.
