American High School girls tennis team went 2-0 last week. The Eagles beat John F. Kennedy High, 7-0, without giving up a set. Irvington looked to end American's momentum in the second match of the week via doubles dominance, but the Eagles' Kaitlyn Joe and Annie Li shook off a first set hiccup against Vida Bao and Sarina Utamsing and won their match 4-6, 6-2, 7-6. According to American coach Karen Joe it was one of the most exciting matches between the two schools.
"With a wonderful display of solid ground strokes and volleys, it was one of the closest and most thrilling matches ever for the American and Irvington friendly rivalry," Joe said.
Irvington lost its first match of last week against Mission San Jose, 7-0.
Moreau Catholic split its matches against Castro Valley and San Lorenzo. Last year's Mariner co-captain Jana Lee was the only Mariner singles player to earn a win after a second set comeback. Her opponent, Sarah Lemp, was forced to retire in the third set due to an injury.
Jamie Pawid and Kristen Shak of Castro Valley allowed a combined three games in their matches. Pawid beat Nicole Dawang 6-1 and 6-1 while Shak won her match against Amanda Ang 6-1 and 6-0. The Lady Mariners bounced back from this early week loss and shut out San Lorenzo 7-0 last Thursday. Delani Dumpit and Gabby Blanco's victory against San Lorenzo's Judy Chen and Claudia Diep was the only match in which Moreau Catholic lost a set.
